The "Great Flood" as written in the Book of Genesis...has been read in account with other ancient writings of various cultures. Some historians claim it to be a myth...a fairy tale...an event that was made up in the imagination of the mind....much like we see today in movies like "Conan, the Barbarian."
The great Babylonian Empire and the land of Mesopotamia, in regions of present day Iraq with ancient cities like Ur, Kish, and Ninevah, all have physical evidence within their archaeological findings...there had been a great flood at one point in history. The country of Israel shows no signs a great flood had occurred, yet even in the Native American tribes of North America, the "Nanabozho" of the Ojibwe tribes, describes a story of a great and terrible flood, some conclude it too is a fable, a fairy tale.
The times in the life of Noah described in the Pentateuch, the first book of what we call the Bible today, was indeed a strange time with almost "make believe" stories coming out of that time period in history.
Noah was the 10th patriarch that is written of in the Bible, and last of his kind prior to the "Great Flood". People lived for hundreds of years in those times, Noah himself reaching the age of 950 years old according to the Ancient Scriptures, and it is written giant people even roamed the land..."Nephilim" a people who some write were created when the Fallen Angels who had joined Lucifer's ranks when he was kicked from Heaven, were then attracted to women who were pretty... of the human race, had sexual intercourse, and produced a race of giants.
Babylonian writings dating as far back as 2500 B.C., tell of a flood in an "Epic of Gilgamesh"... they also write of the "Garden of Eden". The actual story of Noah's Ark is found both in our biblical texts and in the Quran, the religious text of Islam.
So, who really was Noah? What really was going on during this time period in history?...in other cultures along with Jewish Writings who tell of a Great Flood, and were there really giants?
Because I am of Christian beliefs, I will use the texts written in the Book of Genesis as my primary source, and yet keep in mind the writings other cultures have passed down through the corridors of time.
Ok...that being said...allow me to take a look at this man the Bible refers to as: "Noah".
Noah is first mentioned in Genesis 5:28. Noah was the son of Lamech, and at the age of 182 years old, Lamech has been given a son whom he named Noah. The name Noah is a Hebrew word that is identified with comfort, relief, or rest. In fact, Lamech spoke in Genesis 5:28 and is quoted: " May he (Noah) bring us relief from our work and the painful labor of farming this ground the Lord has cursed." Lamech was the son of Methuselah, and went on to live a total of 777 years of age.
Noah was the first patriarch of Jewish history that was born...after the death of Adam. Adam had lived 930 years, and he had died. Noah it seemed had prompted his father Lamech to have hope the curse brought on by Adam's sin...might be lifted.
The Scriptures then point out that when Noah had reached the age of 500 years old, he was the father of Shem,Ham, and Japheth (Genesis 5:32). Later, in Genesis 9:18 it reads: "The sons of Noah who came out of the boat with their father were: Shem, Ham, and and Japheth...with Ham being the father of Canaan. FROM THESE 3 SONS OF NOAH CAME ALL THE PEOPLE THAT NOW POPULATE THE EARTH".
It seems to me Noah was a key link...from the original sin that took place with Adam and Eve...to the Cross through God's very own Son, who has no age because He has always been, our Lord Jesus Christ. Noah was to offer comfort to an evil and corrupt world.
Gleaning of Genesis 6: 1-8
" It became apparent during this time in history, there was a population explosion taking place...all over the earth! And, with more and more daughters now being born...it caught the eyes of what many called "The Sons of God". These "Sons of God" strictly chose women to marry...based on their beauty, with no concern as to what motives or desires be in their hearts...their only requirement was...to be pretty.
It was also during this time the Lord had spoken and said: " My Spirit will not breathe Life...into these men and women of the earth...endlessly! I will not contend, I will not strive, nor will I be disgraced by their conduct...forever. I will allow all people a maximum of 120 years to live, and give heed to the fact they are but mortal."
In those days, and they wrote in later times as well, these so-called "Sons of God" were in fact from a "Spirit World", yet were very much...Evil. They did have sexual affairs with women of the Earth...and the women bore children! These children grew to be warriors, legends, and heroes you hear of in various ancient writings....yet...
The Lord Himself had become sorrowful, so sorrowful that He regretted He had even made man, and grieved in His very heart. For at this time, the Lord saw the very extent of human wickedness, the very fact Evil was out of control, and all the thoughts and motives of the people of the earth...were now given over to Evil...and it broke the Lord's very heart.
The Lord then spoke once more and said: " I am going to get rid of all this...all this ruined Creation...everything...man, animals, birds...and snakes! I totally regret I had ever made all this."
Yet, as the Lord had declared this...His eye beheld Noah. God immediately liked Noah...and God especially like what was in the heart...of Noah......."
