It was a Roman colony, and because of its location and harbors, a major trade centre for those who lived there. It was also multi-national as Greeks, Romans, as well as people of Jewish faith all made a home and living in this city. There was also a strong wealthy sect and numerous slaves to attend to the needs of trade etc. There was also a group known as..."Believers".
Paul had arrived in Corinth after a short stay in Athens Greece where he had gotten little support for the message of the Gospel. He remained in Corinth for quite some time, around 18 months, and laid out specific instructions on acting out the Christian faith in everyday life.
The whole book is given to an enormous variety of issues facing Christians in Corinth including the famous chapter 13...the meaning of love...quoted throughout the world today by both Christian and non-Christian alike.
In chapter 15 Paul begins to wrap up his letter to the "Believers" in Corinth and gives them much encouragement. Here in verse 58 of chapter 15...he infuses confidence into the lives and hearts of "The Believers" in Corinth.
Here then is a Gleaning from 1 Corinthians 15:58....
" So my dear brothers and sisters, with all of Christ's work being distributed among us, working for us, and working through us, we can truly say: "It is what it is!"
For now we know through Him there is nothing in this life that can permanently shake us, and through Him we are holding nothing back!
As we continue in the daily practices of the Christian faith, we are quite aware that we are not wasting our time supporting a useless effort. What we do know is all of our labor through His Grace, through His Mercy, and through His Favor...brings the ultimate purpose as to who we are in Christ Jesus and why we find joy in all we do...that being...to honor Him!"
