A "Titanic" announcement on May 31st, 1911

On May 31st, 1911 came a big announcement from a shipyard in Belfast ,Ireland: "The hull of the Titanic is now complete and will be launched this day!"
The owner of this now famous ocean liner was White Star Line....a company whose owner was the American J.P. Morgan.
It was a proud moment for all those involved, and it was here that an employee of White Star Line made a statement which is now been carved in the oracles of history: "Not even God could sink this ship!"
Let me make this perfectly clear...God did not sink the ship...man did this himself, and the tearful tragedy of this great liner will be remembered...in the minds of humanity forever.

Here are some facts regarding that horrible night...April 14th, 1912 at approximately 11:40 pm. The waters were extremely calm, and the moon was not out, the night was black, oh so black:
1. There were 705 survivors of that terrible tragedy. The ship carried 2227 in all.
2. The Titanic was designed to carry 32 lifeboats, but only 20 were on board. White Star Line management thought too many lifeboats would take away the beauty and the aesthetic value of the luxury liner.
3. There had been a lifeboat drill to be done on April 14th. The Captain of the ship, a Captain Smith made the decision...to cancel the drill.
 a) the first lifeboat held 28 people...it was capable of holding 64.
 b) a total of 472 lifeboat seats...were never used.
4. When the iceberg was first sighted, there was approximately 37 seconds to adjust before running into the iceberg.
 a) First officer Murdoch gave the order to "hard-a-starboard" (which was to take the ship to the left), and he ordered the engine room to reverse the engines (9). The Titanic did go to the left...but not enough.
 b) Although the Captain was a seasoned leader, he had never been on a ship this size. Going at 22 knots with limited sight was too fast, especially in an area known for icebergs.
 c) The iceberg ripped a gash which was 220 to 225 feet in length. The whole ship was 882 feet long.
5. When the distress signals and flares were first fired into the air, the Carpathia was 58 miles away,to the southeast, and when it arrived at the horrific event, they were able to save 705 people.
6. There was another ship, the Californian. It was only 8 to 15 miles away. They too saw the distress flares (but were not quite sure what they were), reported it to their Captain, who had been asleep. The wire operator had already gone to bed, so the Captain decided to wait till morning. They never heard any of the "distress calls" given numerous times by the Titanic.
7. 1503 people perished that night.  328 bodies were found in all, although 119 were too badly damaged and were buried at sea.
8. The temperature of the waters...31 degrees.
9. The only survivor in the icy waters was a Charles Joughin. it has been reported he had been drinking heavily.
10. The Titanic had cost 7.5 million dollars to build.
11. The last American survivor was Lillian Gertrud Asplund. She died in Massachusetts on May 6th, 2006. She was 99 years old. Her mother and one brother also survived the terrible tragedy, but her father and 3 other brothers did not.
12. The last survivor, a Milinna Dean, died on May 31st, 2009. She was 97.
13. In the movie, "Titanic", with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, it was Eleanor Shuman who provided the inspiration. She passed away on March 7th, 1998. She was 87 years old.
14. Of the 705 survivors, 10 have committed suicide.
15. 2 dogs were put into lifeboats and survived: one being a Pomeranian, the other a Pekinese.
16. The Titanic was an official British postal service. No mail has ever been recovered.
17. The wreckage of the Titanic was first discovered in 1985 at a depth of 12,500 feet. It was located approximately 350 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada.
18. The Titanic was equipped with electric elevators, swimming pool, Turkish bath, a squash court, and a gymnasium complete with a mechanical horse and a mechanical camel.
19. The cost? A first class parlor ticket was $4350.00. That is equivalent to $50,000 dollars today.
20. 3rd class passengers had a total of 2 bathtubs...to be shared by 700 people.
21. The movie "Titanic", now 15 years old, has become a link for many cultures throughout the world today.

The maiden voyage went from Southampton, England at noon on April 10th, 1912. From there it went to Cherboug, France, then to Queenstown, Ireland before heading to New York City.
Only one child died from the 1st class section, 49 died from other areas of the great luxury liner.

"For God did not send His Son into the world that He would condemn the world, but that He would give Life to the world...by Him."
