There are no words....

Rachel lived long ago...she was the wife of Jacob, who became known as Israel. She is symbolically called the "mother of the nation Israel".
In the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah used his imagination to see Rachel sitting by her grave mourning...near the town of Bethlehem...at that time many of Israel's people were being carried off as slaves to the city of Babylon.

Later, shortly after the birth of Christ Jesus, Rachel is seen again, mourning by her grave...near the town of Bethlehem...for all the babies Herod had killed in his mad search for the Christ child.

Today...Rachel mourns again...this time it is not in Bethlehem...but in Newtown Connecticut, for babies have been killed, and America weeps:

" From the hills...we hear a voice. It is loud...it is wild...and it is a bitter lament. It is Rachel...weeping for her children...she refuses to be comforted...what comfort can one give? Her children...are gone..... Matthew 2:18

"Christ...have mercy....and show us what to do now"
