Lately I have found myself thinking of my confidence through my personal trust in the Lord Jesus. I happen to be a fan of Oswald Chambers, a Christian author in the early 1900's. He was not famous during his lifetime and passed at the young age of 43 in 1917. He published a total of 3 books. His devoted wife took notes of his thoughts and lectures on life, culminating in his best known book In My Utmost for His Highest. This book has been continually in print since...1927.
One excerpt from Chambers is the thought about having our confidence in Him. He wrote "God expects His children to be so confident in Him that in a crisis they are the ones whom He can rely. A great point is reached spiritually when we stop worrying God over personal matters or over any matter. God expects of us the one thing that glorifies Him...and that is to remain absolutely confident in Him, remembering what He has done beforehand, and sure that His purposes (in your life) will be fulfilled." The Place of Help (906 L)
Sometimes I follow a prayer book entitled The Scottish Book of Common Prayer written in 1637. It has a long and complicated history with it, yet one section, "Proper Psalmes on Certain Daies" intrigues me. It is divided into morning and evening readings, and specifically instructs the reader to "speak the selected Psalms designated for the calendar day." ( It equally eliminates my confusion as to which Scripture I should read each day. lol)
One part of today's reading is Psalm 116, and my focus is on the first 5 verses. It contains appealing words to me because it describes why we choose to love the Lord. Bible historians are not sure as to the author of this Psalm, yet one thing for sure; God saved this author from death. The subject matter in my opinion is the psalmist could not rest or even sleep at night until...God acted. Verse 7 indicates...God had indeed acted!
A Gleaning from Psalm 116 (a)
" My heartfelt choice is to love You Lord. The reasons are plentiful. You hear and continue to hear my prayers. You answer my prayers, actively bending down and listen intently to each word I speak, and You protect me. I am committed to breathing out my prayers to You as long as I have breath.
The Sorrows of Death were doing their utmost to choke out my passions and dreams You have instilled in me. I found myself in a state of deep distress. Honestly, I was hurting badly. Then, I grasped another deep breath and called out...I spoke Your Name!
I cannot explain how, but it was in the depths of this Darkness I experienced Your Kindness. I actually tasted Your Mercies refreshing my lips from Death's heartless fate. You saved me!
Then I spoke with my breath now more fresh and alive; 'Return to your rest my soul. He has done it again! He has been good to me!"
